Five moves that work in a tricity apartment kitchen

Parallel over L, tall over wide, drawers over shutters — small-kitchen planning drawn from a few hundred 8×6 installs.

Five moves that work in a tricity apartment kitchen

Most tricity flats hand you an 8×6 or 8×8 kitchen and expect a family's cooking to happen in it. It can — small kitchens just punish bad planning harder than big ones. Five moves do most of the work.

The five

One — parallel over L where the room is narrow; two facing runs give you more counter and storage per square foot. Two — go tall: take units to the ceiling and buy storage the floor plan doesn't have. Three — drawers over shutters, so the back of a deep cabinet isn't wasted. Four — a lighter finish and a mirror-backed splash to make the room read bigger. Five — keep one honest counter run clear for actual cooking, not appliances.

A small kitchen doesn't need less. It needs everything in exactly the right place.

Done right, an 8×6 kitchen out-works a badly planned one twice its size. We've fitted a few hundred of them — the moves above are what survive.
